“I let the formation of the landscape dictate how I should apply and form the paint on the canvas; blended colours and slight chaotic paint technique is less amount fine detail. The oil paint is applied in thick blended smears using a palette knife to reflect the structured layers of colour in the banded iron. The deep gorges hold such contrasting light that you can only just make out what lies in the deep shadows, and only just make out trees amongst bright pale areas of spinifex. The views are so vast in Karijini that your eye struggles to understand the scale of what you are looking at, holding the whole experience on your mind takes a lot of visual effort. I wanted to capture this feeling in the painting. The larger scale paintings hope to create the same immersive experience.”
